Our Maui Studio Keeps Us Busy!
We are always awestruck each time we open our kilns at the end of a firing. Hours turn into days as the clear flat glass becomes another of our highly coveted fine art glass pieces.
It starts with float glass, a glass cutter, and a very steady hand!
We are always aware that this might be the firing that fails. Even after decades of loading a kiln, there is always a little bit of adrenaline as we close the lid.
This is a masterful process. Sgraffito techniques require a great deal of patience and focus.
5 hours later we take our first peek. At 1600 degrees, the heat can take your breath away. And the piece inside looks like molten lava. It's always humbling.
This is from a series called "Urchin Series Vase"
This vase was a custom color we created for an avid long-time collector.
We would love to create a special piece for you, too.
